The hotels and country houses of Bury and beyond.
A chauffeur’s guide to drop-off and pickup at the hotels and country houses of Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding Suffolk villages — from The Angel in the town centre to the country-house hotels of the wider area.

Bury St Edmunds and the villages around it host a disproportionate share of some of the loveliest hotels and country houses in East Anglia. A chauffeur run that starts or ends at any of them has a particular rhythm, and knowing the differences between them is part of doing the job properly.
The hotels have different characters. Some are urban, in the heart of Bury itself. Others are country-house hotels set in parkland several miles from the town. Each has its own approach, its own etiquette, and its own practical considerations for a chauffeur. What follows is a short note on the ones we work with most regularly.
In the town itself
The Angel Hotel — the obvious one. Angel Hill, directly opposite the Abbey Gate, has been a coaching inn since the sixteenth century and now operates as one of the finest hotels in Suffolk. Drop-off and pickup is directly in front of the main entrance on Angel Hill, which is a wide cobbled square and perfectly manageable for a chauffeur. Short waits are tolerated; for longer waits we pull around to Angel Lane or into the town centre car parks. For weddings and formal events, we coordinate directly with the hotel’s conference team.
The Northgate — smaller, more boutique, on Pump Lane just off the town centre. Pump Lane is narrow and one-way; drop-off needs to be done without blocking it. We usually drop at the junction with Northgate Street and the guest walks the fifteen yards to the door. Pickup likewise.
The Fox — on Eastgate Street, more pub-with-rooms than hotel but a destination restaurant in its own right. Easy drop-off directly outside.
Country-house hotels, within fifteen minutes
Ravenwood Hall — three miles east of Bury off the A14 at Rougham. A proper country-house hotel set in seven acres, popular for weddings, Christmas parties and formal dinners. The approach is up a long driveway from Rougham village; drop-off is directly at the front steps. There is proper parking for chauffeurs waiting during events. Most of our Ravenwood work is wedding guests from further afield staying overnight; we handle the arriving-and-departing logistics.
Chippenham Park — strictly speaking a wedding and events venue rather than a hotel, but worth mentioning for completeness. Twelve miles north-west of Bury near Newmarket, set in a grade-II listed park. The driveway is substantial; the drop-off point is at the main entrance of the house. For weddings we often run shuttles between Chippenham Park and the Bury hotels where guests are staying.
Milsoms Kesgrave Hall — a little further out, closer to Ipswich, but a frequent destination for Bury-based clients heading out for a special-occasion dinner. The driveway is wide and welcoming; drop-off is at the main doors.
Country-house hotels, within thirty minutes
Bedford Lodge Hotel, Newmarket — twenty minutes west on the A14. The racing community’s hotel of choice during race meetings and sales weeks, and a popular stopover for business travellers. The drive-up has a proper covered portico; drop-off is sheltered even in the worst weather. During sales weeks the car park fills by mid-afternoon, and we usually hold just outside and come in on call.
Hintlesham Hall — thirty-five minutes south-east, between Bury and Ipswich. Set in a seventeenth-century mansion with gardens, popular for weddings and corporate retreats. The driveway is long and winds through parkland; drop-off is at the main entrance.
Swynford Manor — fifteen minutes west near Newmarket, a Victorian manor house that operates as a wedding and events venue. Drop-off is at the main entrance; waiting is in the designated car park for drivers during events.
Weddings specifically
A large share of our hotel and country-house work is weddings — either delivering guests from the Bury hotels to the venue, delivering the bridal party from home to the ceremony, or running the airport runs for international guests the day before and the day after. Each has its own logistics.
For a Ravenwood wedding where guests are staying at the Angel, for example, we might run three or four cars across an afternoon to shuttle guests between the two. We coordinate directly with the wedding planner or the hotel’s conference team to time the arrivals correctly — too early and guests mill around, too late and the ceremony starts without them.
For bridal party transport, the courtesy that matters most is spotless presentation — the car itself, the chauffeur’s attire, the discreet way the driver appears exactly when needed and vanishes when not. These are not things we do differently for weddings. They are what we do every day.
A note on timing
Country-house hotels are deceptively far from Bury. Ravenwood looks three miles away on a map, which it is; the driveway from the main road adds another five minutes. Chippenham Park’s own driveway can take ten minutes end to end. For weddings and formal events, we build these local travel times into the schedule rather than leaving them as a surprise.
